A total of 20 stayers make up the nominations for the $300,000 Group 2 Evergreen Turf Brisbane Cup (2200m) this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, including three from the Sydney stables of Waller who celebrated his 13th Group 1 win of the season last weekend with Winx taking out the Queensland Oaks.

Also held last Saturday at Doomben Racecourse, where the action returns this weekend, was the Eagle Farm Cup where Waller’s defending champion Moriarty ran second behind the three-year-old Kiwi winner Werther.

Moriarty is one of Waller’s three Brisbane Cup nominees for this weekend also, the seven-year-old Clodovil gelding having run fourth to Gai Waterhouse’s French import Pornichet the run before the Eagle Farm Cup.

If accepted he’ll be on the short back-up on Saturday but still a livewire hope based on his consistent form of late in the same class of races at Doomben.

Waller’s other best hope of Brisbane Cup success this winter is fellow seven-year-old Index Linked, the son of Dansili scratched out from the Eagle Farm Cup field last Saturday but chasing back-to-back wins after success in the Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m) at the Sunshine Coast on May 16.

Stablemate Vilanova joins the two top cup performers, the four-year-old son of Commands after his first win since the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) at the same track and distance over 12 months ago.

Floria won the Brisbane Cup last year for Peter Moody who returns in 2015 with another shot saddling-up Authrozied three-year-old Inauguration, the youngster out to atone for a 14th behind stablemate Upham in this year’s Grand Prix Stakes from May 23.

A host of other hopefuls come off better lead-up runs including the top fancied mare in the mix Epingle for Michael Kent.

The veteran Pins seven-year-old won the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2200m) at the Gold Coast on April 25 before a Doomben Cup ninth and then improved third only last weekend behind Werther in the Eagle Farm Cup.

Escado also has form around Waller’s Index Linked leading into Saturday’s possible rematch, the Casino Prince five-year-old improving on a Doomben Cup 12th to finish a nose away second in the Caloundra Cup over the mile and a half.

Other in-form Brisbane Cup nominees include Brian Smith’s Jetset Lad, Landlocked who own four on the trot before a last start second, Nigel Blackiston’s mare Let’s Make Adeal who comes off a black type win in Adelaide from mid-May and the Joe Pride-trained Sense Of Occasion who on the Listed WJ McKell Cup (2400m) on a Heavy (9) Randwick track from May 23.

The official 2015 Brisbane Cup final field, barriers, jockeys and weights are out later in the week so stay tuned.
