Waller Runners Ready to Go in 2016 Brisbane Cup

June 7th, 2016

Chris Waller was pleased with the condition of his three runners in Saturday’s 2016 Brisbane Cup (2400m), but concedes each will have to improve noticeably if they are to win the Group 2 race at Eagle Farm.

Waller is set to saddle Hawkspur, Junoob and Index Linked in the 2016 Brisbane Cup; all three runners having posted notable success at the class and distance for the leading trainer through busy racing careers.

Each runner has found typically competitive form leading into the 2016 Brisbane Cup and while believing they all face a task in overcoming what is likely to be a talent-rich field in the stayers’ feature, told AAP he is pleased with the condition of all three of his runners.

“Index Linked and Junoob will run and possibly Hawkspur who is also entered for Flemington,” Waller said.

“Realistically they are all in the twilight of their careers and need to improve to win the Brisbane Cup.

“So they have to shape up but the main thing is they are all healthy and sound.”

Hawkspur has returned to good form already in 2016 and is a proven performer over the course and distance; having charged home to win the 2013 edition of the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) in impressive fashion.

Having posted eight wins and ten minors through fifty-four career starts, the Purrealist gelding resumed this time for sixth in the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m; progressing to mid-pack finishes in his nest two starts before running fourth in the Listed Lord Mayors Cup (2000m) and fifth in the Listed WJ McKell Cup (2400m) most recently.

Winner of the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) in 2014 before having the title striped, Junoob ran fourth in the Group 3 JRA Cup (2000m) upon arriving in Brisbane this time on May 14th; placing sixth in the Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2400m) a fortnight ago.

Index Linked clearly required the run and more distance when 12th in the Doncaster Prelude first-up, but responded with an impressive performance for second in the Group 3 Japan Racing Association Plate (2000m) at Randwick most notably on April 16th.

The 2016 Brisbane Cup field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
